Dental implants can be used to replace one or more teeth or even a completely edentulous jaw. Usually, an implant is an artificial tooth root that’s made of titanium and attached to the jawbone. It adapts to and bonds with the surrounding bone within a few months. The implant can then be used to support a crown, bridge or denture.

In our dental centres, implant surgery is usually performed in our own operating theatre under local anaesthesia. However, general anaesthesia is also available at the patient’s request. In this case, a specialist in anaesthesiology is involved in the operation, in addition to the specialist dentist.

Dental implants are meant to stay in place permanently. Therefore, it’s important to choose the right kind of implant. We use high-quality Straumann dental implants that have been scientifically studied. They include a comprehensive guarantee from the manufacturer.

Customers are generally satisfied with implant treatments – an implant is almost as comfortable in use as natural teeth.

Tooth extraction

The most common reasons for tooth extraction are advanced decay, periodontal disease and orthodontic treatment. Wisdom teeth that erupt only partially or not all and damage to a tooth as a result of an accident can also be reasons for a tooth extraction. Tooth extraction is often the last option, when no other treatment is available.

Teeth can be removed conventionally or, where appropriate, surgically. Conventional extraction involves using extraction instruments to remove the tooth from the supporting tissue. If conventional extraction is not possible due to the difficult location of the tooth, or its root being in bone or under the mucosa, the tooth is removed surgically, usually under local anaesthesia. A good anaesthetic makes sure the tooth extraction doesn’t hurt. The removed tooth can be replaced with an implant or bridge structure.

Oral mucosal diseases

Diseases of the oral mucosa are examined and treated by oral and maxillofacial surgeons.

The mucous membranes of the mouth can show a variety of changes from pale to red, smooth to bulging and painful to painless. Sometimes they appear slowly over time and sometimes very quickly. Abnormal findings can also be detected in the jawbone (e.g. as a chance finding on an X-ray). An experienced dentist can often identify such lesions based on clinical images. However, lesions that have been present in the mouth for a longer period of time should be sampled to confirm diagnosis.

If the mucosal lesion is small, the entire lesion is removed surgically under local anaesthesia, and then sent for examination. In the case of a larger lesion, a small sample is extracted from the edge of the lesion to include also some healthy mucosa for comparison. Once the diagnosis is confirmed, treatment can be planned. Sometimes a follow-up is enough, or the lesion can be surgically removed under local anaesthesia.
If necessary, the patient will be referred to a hospital for further treatment.
